Invest4Nature launches new toolbox for evaluating Nature-Based Solutions

The Horizon Europe project Invest4Nature has launched a new online toolbox designed to help municipalities, investors and practitioners assess the costs, benefits and investment potential of nature-based solutions. By supporting evidence-based decision-making, the toolbox addresses one of the key barriers to scaling nature-based solutions: demonstrating their value to investors and decision-makers.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) such as urban greening, wetland restoration and sustainable forest management can deliver climate, biodiversity and societal benefits. However, investment decisions are often hampered by limited evidence on costs, benefits and financial performance. The Invest4Nature Toolbox addresses this gap by bringing together assessment methods, decision-support functionalities and evidence from real-world projects in a single online platform.

Developed by partner Engineering Ingegneria Informatica with key contributions from Aarhus University, the toolbox was developed with two key objectives:

1) facilitate the evaluation of Nature-based Solutions across landscapes by assessing their sustainability and effectiveness with economic and financial analysis capabilities, and

2) increase public understanding of NbS’ value by providing a reference database of case studies.

Through its cost-benefit analysis, performance assessment and recommender functionalities, users can estimate economic costs and benefits, compare project performance and access evidence-based recommendations informed by the integrated Invest4Nature Evidence Database. The toolbox is designed for municipalities, planners, nature-based enterprises, investors, researchers and organisations involved in financing, evaluating or implementing nature-based solutions.

"One of the key barriers to scaling nature-based solutions is the lack of practical tools that support investment decisions," said Andreas Tuerk from Joanneum Research, coordinator of Invest4Nature. The Invest4Nature Toolbox helps bridge that gap by making assessment methods and evidence more accessible to practitioners and decision-makers."

The NbS DS Toolbox is freely accessible online and can be explored at https://invest4nature.eu/results/nbs-ds-toolbox/. Stakeholders interested in testing, applying, or further developing the tools are encouraged to contact us at hello@horizonnua.eu.

About Invest4Nature

Invest4Nature is a Horizon Europe project working to strengthen the role of NbS as a credible and investable response to climate and biodiversity challenges. Bringing together 15 partners from 11 European countries, the project develops tools and evidence to support better investment and implementation decisions. Within the consortium, Horizon Nua's role was to work with Living Labs on business modelling and financing for NbS and on developing a regional nature-based entrepreneurship strategy.
